ABU DHABI, Pupils in some high schools will learn about responsible energy consumption as part of a new curriculum introduced by the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Education.

The aim is to raise awareness about the importance of energy sources, means of rationalising consumption and sustainable energy.

Hussain Al Hammadi, Minister of Education, said the new subject will help students achieve the national targets set for the country.

"The educational connotations and meaningful concepts of such perceptions are the means through which we seek to instill social awareness and consciousness in students to prepare them for the future," he said.

Mr Al Hammadi said that the oil wealth of the UAE required conscious generations capable of handling the resource and developing innovative ways that contribute to its sustainability.

The subject may help stimulate the minds of students, encouraging them to come up with creative ideas on how to save energy and prevent wastage, and develop alternative non-oil energy solutions.

Suhail Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy, said authorities were planning more education subjects on the topic.

The ministry has future plans dedicated to student care and support, he said, as well as the issuance of specialised publications.

It also plans to organise awareness lectures for university students and academics to ensure the sustainability of natural resources and environmentally friendly development.
