The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) have established a Working Group bringing together policy-makers, researchers and development practitioners, under the project “Trade and SDGs in Arab countries”. This Working Group is mandated to explore the potential role of trade in achieving inclusive and sustainable growth in the Arab region. The Arab Development Portal plays an essential role in producing relevant statistical and analytical knowledge and exploring the development of new indicators that would contribute to monitoring the instrumental role of trade.

This first meeting of the Working Group is held in Cairo on the 9th and 10th of May 2017 aiming to adopt a structured action plan, identify key trends of economic integration in the Arab countries, consolidate the understanding of challenges posed by the shifts in modernized economic structures/diversification, and identify areas of key interest within the SDGs to Arab countries to be addressed with trade and trade-related policy measures.

The members will be discussing background papers, which were prepared by the Arab Development Portal team as the basis for further deliberations and exchange of views on trade and trade-related matters.

The UNDP-SIDA cooperation aims to establish an evidence-based dialogue for standardized, sustainable and inclusive policy proposals that address the challenges, opportunities, and dynamics of the Arab region. It also aims at enhancing the capacity of analysis of impacts and linkages between trade and SDGs, and the comprehensive understanding of how trade is an engine of growth. The analytical works are carried out under the assumption that committed and integrated regional trade policies – being aligned to national development strategies of the countries – are essential for full implementation of the SDGs.

The Working Group ultimately aims to identify specific policy recommendations on how to leverage on the potential of trade for development at both national and regional level, particularly in key areas of interest to the improvement of economic competitiveness. Additionally, and with the support of domain experts, the Working Group will assist with the establishment of relevant indicators to benchmark the impacts of trade on the economic integration in the Arab countries within the framework of the SDGs.
